Job Summary

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust requires a highly motivated, reliable, and flexible Electrical Technician to join the Estates Team. The role involves delivering key objectives to meet both departmental and Trust requirements.

The post holder will assist the Estates Directorate in providing a comprehensive and responsive Estate Management Service across all Trust properties. This is a hands-on, multi-skilled role, covering a full range of electrical and building maintenance duties.

Main Duties

  • Diagnose faults, repair, and maintain building engineering services, plant, and equipment.

  • Deliver safe isolations within your specialist craft skill set.

  • Oversee fault-finding, repairs, maintenance, and installation of complex plant, equipment, and buildings.

  • Undertake Authorised Person duties.

  • Participate in the on-call rota for out-of-hours emergency calls, including some weekends and evenings.

Location: Luton and Dunstable Hospital, covering services across Trust sites.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday–Friday.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work independently to complete projects as instructed by Estates Managers & Officers.

  • Test, service, and maintain equipment such as decontamination systems, medical gas systems, and gas boilers.

  • Identify, diagnose, and rectify complex faults in building engineering services, including fire alarms, baby tag systems, Building Management System, steam boilers, and L.P.H.W. boilers.

  • Fabricate, assemble, erect, install, and commission new work.

  • Conduct periodic checks, servicing, and testing of plant and equipment in line with planned maintenance schedules.

  • Monitor, service, adjust, and log performance data to ensure efficient operation of plant and equipment.

  • Lift and handle heavy objects, use access equipment, and work in confined spaces such as roof voids and service ducts.

  • Analyse fault alarms from Building Management and fire alarm systems and rectify faults.

  • Comply with Health & Safety Executive procedures, Trust Health and Safety policies, procedures, and working practices.

  • Complete relevant paperwork for departmental operations.

  • Attend training programs to fulfil job role requirements and develop new skills.

  • Familiarise, train, or instruct others as appropriate.

  • Participate in on-call arrangements to deliver service using the available communication system.

  • Work according to Trust policies and procedures, using initiative and flexibility to meet client needs.

  • Understand and operate complex plant and equipment to fault-find and repair equipment effectively.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: HNC/D, NVQ level 4, C&G or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline; Time served electrician

  • Desirable: IOSH Working Safely

Experience

  • Essential: Proven service/maintenance experience; demonstrable supervisory experience

Knowledge

  • Essential: Health & Safety procedures

  • Desirable: In-depth knowledge of building services engineering; Building Management Systems; steam raising plant (especially steam generators)
