Job Summary

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Senior Financial Accountant to support high-quality financial management and drive business growth. The role focuses on maintaining financial standards to consistently improve patient outcomes, while using evidence to make improvements and developing innovative financial solutions.

The ideal candidate will be commercially astute, hold a Professional Accountancy qualification (CCAB/CIMA) with current membership registration, and be educated to master’s degree level or equivalent professional qualification, with significant management experience.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set clear standards and expectations to ensure compliance with professional accountancy standards

  • Lead the Financial Services Team in the Financial Business Unit (FBU)

  • Work closely with colleagues in Charities, Accounts Receivable, Tax, and Capital teams

  • Promote high standards to improve operational efficiency and financial outcomes

  • Support transformational projects that enhance patient experience, staff wellbeing, and service efficiency

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications:

  • Professional Accountancy qualification (CCAB, CIMA) with current membership

  • Post-qualification development and ongoing CPD

  • Master’s degree in a relevant technical, scientific, or information systems discipline, or equivalent experience

Essential Knowledge:

  • Extensive experience in financial management at a senior level in large, complex organisations

  • Thorough understanding of NHS accounting principles, procedures, and audit requirements

  • Proficiency with financial software packages

Essential Experience:

  • Significant accountancy experience

  • Ability to analyse complex information and determine solutions

  • Experience in large, complex NHS organisations

  • Leading and motivating diverse teams

  • Producing statutory accounts and financial returns

Desirable Experience:

  • Substantial experience in NHS finance
