Job Summary
West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Senior Graphic Designer to play a key role in helping to inform, engage and celebrate staff community and patients by using creative design skills to deliver campaigns and collateral which make a real impact.
You will be responsible for creating engaging designs print/production and e-distribution and have an eye for detail.
This will include supporting print and digital campaigns, producing designs, layouts and graphics, wayfinding solution design and signs, clinical form design, developing publications and a wide range of support and communication materials.
You will have a relevant qualification (HND or degree) and/or significant experience in graphic design, and will enjoy having a high level of autonomy as you work on projects from concept to completion.
You will support with the development of wayfinding, creating effective and use friendly navigation systems within hospital settings.
They will blend design, human psychology, and environmental planning to develop, intuitive, signage, maps, and environmental clues that help patient’s visitors and staff navigate with ease.

Main Duties of the Job
- Manage the day-to-day design/illustration workload to meet the demands of the service.
- Make value judgements on the correct solutions, taking into account client, objectives and project planning.
- Follow procedures and protocols for design workflow.
- Simultaneously, coordinate, prioritise and project managing workflow to tight deadlines (30-45 projects at one time).
- Plan and coordinate clients, photographers, illustrators, printers and suppliers.
- Organise meeting, meet delivery within a specified timescale and within budget.
- Manage design project budgets and ensure value for money, maintaining quality of design projects and delivery to ‘best fit for purpose’ standards.
- Setting and monitoring design standards for quality of work.
- Manage and deliver a portfolio of projects from specification, design, production, print/sign buying and quality control.
- Refresh and develop new templates for colleagues to work with independently.
- Collaborate with architects, interior designers, facility managers, and stakeholders to create intuitive navigation solutions that enhance the overall patient and visitor experience to deliver wayfinding and sign solutions.
- Implement brand guidelines, maintaining consistency and quality to ensure all branding is working within the organisation’s corporate identity.
- Be a key point of contact, advising colleagues and other partners on using the brand assets correctly and effectively.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop user-centred wayfinding solutions tailored to patients, visitors, and staff, considering accessibility and inclusivity.
- Work within the branding to ensure wayfinding designs of line with the hospitals visual identity, ensuring materials, colours, fonts, and finishes that align with the hospitals identity.
- Support online/digital communications for the website, intranet, social media and e-newsletters, trust service publications, i.e., strategies/annual reports etc.
- Liaise with other members of the department over work related issues and lend help, support and oversee work when required.
- Liaise directly with client to gain a strong understanding of their project requirements.
- Advise on the possible design solutions/outcomes and reach overall project.
- Relay the concept, create visuals, communicate ideas and view on the project, establishing a good trust relationship with the client and gain the cooperation of others.
- Deal effectively and courteously with department customers, receiving all types of Medical Illustration work.
- Advise customers on best possible solutions.
- Support events, including preparing presentations, induction packs, event materials and displays etc.
- Design a wide range of material for publication, printing, presentations and associated electronic media.
- Produce visual communications for research in the form of graphs, Infographics, charts and diagrams.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential
- Degree level in Graphic Design or equivalent relevant working experience in Graphic Design/Medical Illustration.
Desirable
- Degree plus IMI Diploma and registration Management degree.
- Wide range of skills/ theoretical knowledge in graphic design and photography innovative uses of technology
- Evidence of development of new services within a department of Medical Illustration
- Supervisory or management experience
Knowledge
Essential
- Computer literacy and a good working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Macintosh) and Microsoft Office.
- The ability to produce print ready artwork.
- The ability to use Adobe video editing software.
Desirable
- The ability to draw freehand.
- A working knowledge of reprographic and photographic processes.
Experience
Essential
- Business / professional experience in graphic design or similar design / print environment.
- Practical experience and competence using Adobe Creative Collection.
- Experience of designing communications materials, logos or branded elements
- Experience of working with a range of internal and external stakeholders and an ability to develop good working relationships.
- Experience of working successfully as part of a team, whilst also being able to work on own initiative
